Custom Game Table, Banquette & Floating Shelves in Charlotte, NC
Not your typical dining table
Want to play games, but also eat dinner? Want to keep pesky felines away from your puzzles?
We had some clients reach out to us with an idea for a pretty unique dining room table. They wanted a table where they could sit down and enjoy meals with their family, but they also happen to be avid gamers and puzzle lovers. The challenge was figuring out how to make one table work for both.
There was one more consideration — their cats.
Anyone who has tried to put together a puzzle with a cat around knows how quickly things can go sideways. They wanted a way to leave games and puzzles set up without worrying about pieces being knocked onto the floor.
After a few conversations and quite a few emails back and forth, we came up with a design that checked all the boxes.
A Dining Table That Does More
The table was designed with a recessed game and puzzle area in the center. We added a comfortable padded material to give them a dedicated surface for working on puzzles and playing games.
When it’s time for dinner, two removable leaves can be placed over the recessed area, turning the table back into a traditional dining table. When the leaves are in place, the games and puzzles are protected from curious cats while the family can enjoy a meal.
It was one of those projects where the details really mattered. Instead of building a standard dining table, we were able to design the entire piece around how the clients actually use their space.
Maple & Walnut Custom Dining Table
The table was built primarily from maple with walnut inlays. We used an aging agent to give the maple a warmer, more naturally aged appearance, followed by a clear satin finish.
The combination of the maple and walnut gives the table some contrast without making it feel too busy. The result is a piece that works as a functional dining table but has some hidden features that make it much more useful for this particular family.
Custom Banquette & Floating Shelves
Along with the table, we also built a custom banquette and floating shelves for the dining area.
The banquette was painted using Insl-X Cabinet Coat in Sherwin-Williams Caviar with a satin sheen. The countertop and floating shelves were made from maple and finished with a clear satin finish to complement the dining table.
Building all of these pieces together allowed us to keep the materials and finishes consistent throughout the space while still giving each piece its own purpose.

This project is a great example of why we enjoy custom woodworking. The clients didn't just need a dining table — they needed a table that fit the way they live, from family meals and game nights to working on puzzles with a couple of curious cats around.
